It is with immense sorrow that we advise you of the sudden and unexpected death on Tuesday 10th February 2026 of Dr. John Rainey MBE.
Apart from his many significant business achievements, John was a towering figure in British and Irish numismatics, including being a founder of the Northern Branch of the Numismatic Society of Ireland, and President of the British Association of Numismatic Societies (BANS). John was a committed and insightful President of BANS, steering the association through COVID and ensuring that BANS remained relevant to Numismatists around the world. Always thinking of the future, John reminded our committee that 2028 was the 75th anniversary of the founding of BANS, an event he was so looking forward to.
Dr John Rainery’s funeral took place on Monday 16th February at Donaghadee Parish, followed by a burial at Clandeboye cemetery, followed by a wake at the Royal Ulster Yacht Club.
John was a gentleman and a very generous benefactor, who will be missed by all he encountered.
